Volunteer as a Sports Coach in Kenya

Could you find the next Mo Salah?
Sports form an integral part of local communities and teams often foster a sense of family and identity. Kenyans are sports mad, particularly for football (soccer), and many dream of becoming the next star. Unfortunately, proper coaching is often lacking, but with a little support, young people can not only develop their talents, but they can also gain a heightened sense of community.

This is where you come in!

What will I be doing?
As a volunteer on our Kenya sports programme, you will engage in two primary activities: helping with sports education in a local school, and assisting a community team with training and coaching. Your role in the school will often concentrate on assisting a local teacher with sports and PE lessons, helping to engage the next generation in sport.

Your second role as a volunteer sports coach in Kenya will revolve around helping out a more experienced sports team. Many local football teams meet up for afternoon or evening sessions and are often desperate for a little coaching or help. Even if you are not a professional coach your willingness to get stuck in will be of great benefit, and training sessions are always great fun! Our work with these teams also has a more serious side. Many are composed of young men, often without jobs or the prospect of getting one. Working with these vulnerable groups is vital for keeping them motivated, and sport offers a fantastic structured environment, often creating a valuable sense of community identity.

Typical Week

Volunteers are generally expected to work at their placement five days a week. Weekday mornings will start with breakfast with other volunteers at our volunteer house, with school starting at around 9pm. You may be asked to assist with PE classes, other types of class, or help to organise school games events. At around 12pm you’ll get a break for lunch, which you can take with other volunteers and local staff. In the afternoons you’ll work with a local team or community sports project, coaching and developing the skills of local residents.

You will generally finish your placement at around 5pm, though you’ll find that the children will often want you to stay around to play! After your placement, you’ll get a chance to unwind with other volunteers and local team members over dinner, and we often organise games and activities of our own in the evenings. Weekends are also your own but there are always plenty of extra Adventures to do in Kenya!

Living With Agape

Most of our volunteers in Kenya live in our purpose-built volunteer house, supervised and run by our local team. Living in our volunteer house is great fun, and provides the perfect balance between getting involved in a big Kenyan family and having the opportunity to relax with other like-minded volunteers.

You will most likely be sharing dorm-style rooms with other volunteers, and these are typically single-sex. We also have some private rooms available. Other facilities at the volunteer house include a roof terrace with a barbecue, games room, and plenty of communal space for games and activities.

Included Extras

All of Agape's volunteers in Kenya also get the opportunity to take part in at least two extra trips free during their stay in Kenya.

The first of these is to the IDP (Internally Displaced Persons) camps an hours drive from the volunteer house. These camps were set up during the election violence in 2007 to house those who lost their home during the troubles. Thankfully the situation is much more peaceful now, but sadly many residents have not moved since. Agape is committed to continuing to offer as much support as possible to some of the most vulnerable people in Kenya. We help to run a school there and are also engaged in various other infrastructure projects to help the local community. During your day there you will help out with whatever projects we have ongoing at the time. This may include medical outreach work, distributing supplies, or helping with the building and maintenance of ongoing construction projects.

The other trip Agape offers free in Kenya is our Nairobi City Tour. This is your chance to relax after the stresses of your placement or work in IDP, and provides the opportunity to get up close and personal with giraffes and elephants at the animal orphanage. It will also help to orientate you in Kenya's capital city - a vibrant and exciting place with plenty to explore!

Optional Extras

Agape Volunteers offers a variety of extra Adventures for volunteers in Kenya including Maasai Mara safaris, hiking and biking trips through beautiful national parks, and weekend getaways to tropical beaches on the Indian Ocean. We also offer a range of mountain climbing trips, from Mt Longanot, to Mt Kenya, to Mt Kilimanjaro!
